21 Questions: Evita Broughton

Evita Broughton recently joined Ellipses as our new Account Executive. She moved to Oakland, Calif., from Washington D.C. where she attended George Washington University’s School of Business to earn her Master of Tourism Administration (MTA). As if moving to the opposite coast wasn’t a big enough change for Evita, she recently became engaged to her boyfriend, Will. She couldn’t be more excited for the opportunities Oakland and Ellipses will bring for her. For more on her bio, click here. For now, learn more about Evita as she answers our 21 questions.

  1. I first knew I wanted to be in PR when: I was in high school. I liked the fact that PR combined a lot of things I enjoyed – working with clients, writing, research, and event planning. It caters to my personality because I have a lot of different interests. Solely writing all day would bore me, only focusing on events all day would drive me crazy, and interacting with clients all day wouldn’t satisfy my curiosity. I was drawn to public relations because it has a little bit of everything I like and it’s very much in line with what I’m naturally good at.
  2. My dream client: would be a fun travel destination. There’s so much to explore; you have the landscape, activities, people, culture, food, etc. Ideally, I’d love to represent a hidden gem of a place that has a lot to offer but doesn’t quite have the name recognition it deserves.
  3. If I weren’t in PR, I would be: an actress or a dancer. In hindsight, I wish I had taken formal dance classes as a child.
  4. Your biggest PR horror story: There are only a few but I’ve tried so hard to block them out. When I think back on them I’m like “What. The. Eff.” I have nightmares about the time we media trained a client [with my previous agency]. The goal was to spotlight him and raise the visibility of his company. After weeks of practice, we got him on live television and he clammed up like a three year old – on LIVE television. I was backstage helpless, cringing, hoping it would over sooner rather than later, praying nobody watched it.
  5. My first job was: Bag girl at Kroger
  6. My biggest accomplishment so far: Being a good big sister. I have two younger sisters and my mantra has always been “be the big sister to them I wish I had.” I am the oldest so I had to figure things out on my own. I have great parents, but I think there’s something that can be said for getting advice and help from your sibling, and I’ve tried to help them through different phases through life and show them the ropes in a way that I wish I had someone my age help me with. I try my best to be a good big sister.
  7. Favorite social media platform: Facebook. Soon to be Instagram and Pinterest… because I’m getting married!
  8. Biggest pet peeve: I hate when people have poor manners.
  9. Best movie I ever saw: Shawshank Redemption.
  10. Why I love my job, in three words: Best boss ever.
  11. I’m secretly terrified of: Birds
  12. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I watch: Empire.
  13. Favorite place you’ve traveled to: Belize
  14. If I could go only go to one place before I die, I would go: Brazil
  15. If you could have dinner with anybody, alive or dead, who would it be: My family. We always have such a great time together. While it would be an honor to meet someone famous, I don’t know them and they don’t know me, so I would be nervous, versus really enjoying the company of somebody that I love.
  16. Ebooks or physical books: Physical books. I love curling up on a couch and the feeling of accomplishment when I close the book and the feel of it. I don’t think that’s a feeling that can be replaced, no matter how convenient Ebooks may be. I can get lost in bookstores for hours.
  17. Favorite thing about The Bay so far? EVERYTHING! The food, the people, the physical beauty of it – every day is an adventure and I love it.
  18. Top 3 most played songs on my iPod: Love, Love, Love – Donny Hathaway; Not a Bad Thing to Fall in Love by JT; Total Praise – Richard Smallwood
  19. When I’m not working: I’m exploring my new city.
  20. Favorite publication to read: USA Today and Essence magazine.
  21. Advice to future PR pros: Take the time to learn your craft.
