Honey, and loads of it, was used as a prop on Tuesday morning when Ellipses’ clients Ryan Scott of Mission Beach Cafe and William Werner of polite/persuasion joined Liam Mayclem, the fantastic host of “Eye on the Bay” on KPIX-TV/CBS, for the photo shoot for their upcoming “Cooking with Honey” event in the Macy’s Cellar at San Francisco’s Union Square on Wednesday evening, September 10. (Mark your calendar!) Liam’s hosting a delicious demonstration of honey-themed sweet and savory dishes by William and Ryan. Keep an eye out for the final photographs, which will be seen in a full-page ad on the back of the San Francisco Chronicle Food section on September 3. Sweet!
Ellipses has been clocked! The knock-out new cocktail lounge from acclaimed chef Michael Mina, CLOCK BAR, opened on Tuesday, July 15. Ellipses partnered with Erin Hunt Communications to launch Mina Group’s newest showcase, which is located across from Restaurant MICHAEL MINA in the lobby of The Westin St. Francis in San Francisco’s Union Square. Lead bartender Marcovaldo Dionysos is legendary for his encyclopedic knowledge of mixology, and highly respected for his work at Absinthe, Harry Denton’s Starlight Room and, most recently, Tres Agaves. He created my favorite cocktail at Absinthe, the Ginger Rogers, which is on the menu at CLOCK BAR...along with 31 other handcrafted concoctions, and my new favorite thing to eat, at least this month, the soft shell crab po’boy. YUM.

Media coverage of CLOCK BAR has been intense. Urban Daddy, Daily Candy, Thrillist, 7x7, EaterSF, San Francisco Examiner, Alcademics, Contra Costa Times, and more, all within two days of opening. In addition to working with all of these outlets, Ellipses managed the invitation process for three(!) pre-opening receptions, each one targeting different groups of VIP guests, helping to generate extraordinary word-of-mouth buzz.

Yesterday my good friend Jenn and I took advantage of the glorious warm summer weather and made a day trip to Healdsburg and Napa. Both of us are very efficient with time and planning, but even we were surprised at all we had accomplished, visited and tasted in a 12 hour period. Our stops, in order, starting at 10 am: Foppiano Winery where we tasted five wines (off to a good start!), Rodney Strong Winery (got a little backstage tour of that evening’s outdoor jazz concert), J Winery (which we toured - must return for “Bubble Room” experience), lunch at Jimtown (YUM - thanks for the amazing strawberry shortcake dessert, Carrie!), Armida Winery (purchased some Poizin and Antidote wine, then took a nap on their front deck before heading to Napa), Dean & DeLuca (didn’t buy anything!), Domaine Chandon (oysters and Champagne, of course), and then dinner at Ubuntu. Really a perfect day.

It’s safe to say Ubuntu has, with one visit, risen to the top of my list of favorite restaurants. It’s no wonder Chef Jeremy Fox is one of the Best New Chefs in Food & Wine magazine for 2008. The accolades are well-deserved and notable, especially since it’s a 100% vegetarian restaurant. Everything we ordered was spectacular, but I think my favorites were the salads: beets roasted in nectarine juices, speckled quinoa, hazelnut, ficoide glaciale (ice plant!) (ABOVE); and baby artichokes with miso “bagna cauda”, surrey arugula, parmesan, and lovage oil. Any corn dessert pretty much captures my interest. Ubuntu’s sweet corn pudding cake with honey ice milk, warm peach and blackberry caramel had me savoring every bite like it was the last. Many of the menu’s main ingredients come from Ubuntu’s biodynamic garden. Can’t wait to return and see what Chef Fox does with summer tomatoes!
Congratulations to Amanda Washington (in photo on left, next to Scott Baird) of Rye for winning the June Monday Mixing Contest at Rye!! Sponsored by Cabana Cachaca, the contest drew the industry’s biggest names, all vying for first prize: a trip to the Cabana World Cocktail Finals in Rio de Janiero this November.

Polite Persuasion’s William Werner (in t-shirt, below right), Jordan Mackay, spirits writer for 7x7 (blue shirt) and mixologist Dominic Venegas served as judges and took the responsibility of tasting 13 different cocktails very seriously.

Just have to share this photo I snapped with my iPhone at the outstanding Seal concert at the Black & White Ball last weekend. Perhaps we can add “rock concert photography” to the list of services Ellipses provides its clients...? All kidding aside, the evening was a smashing success, from the Seal concert to the spectacular fireworks display behind City Hall for the “Midnight Surprise” (bottom, right). The next Ball is two years away - can’t wait!
Ellipses is assisting with press at the San Francisco Symphony’s famous Black & White Ball, taking place next Saturday, May 31. We’ve been hard at work pitching some last-minute stories about the incredible the food at the event, which will be catered by the city’s largest and best catering company, McCall Associates. They are prepping for the over 6,000 party-goers, who will start descending on Civic Center at 5 pm for the VIP dinners and receptions. Tune in to KRON 4 tomorrow morning at 8:30 to see McCall Executive Chef Lucas Schoemaker on “KRON 4 Weekend “ with Henry Tenenbaum, and then on Tuesday watch a great segment hosted by Nick Smith on “View from the Bay” on KGO/ABC 7 at 3 pm, also featuring Chef Lucas, alongside Ball Chairwoman Patricia Sprincin (see above photo). Tickets to the Ball are still available, and as of today there are still a handful left to see the headlining concert by Seal at Davies Symphony Hall at 8 pm. In addition to Seal, the Ball will present music covering Latin/Brazilian, Rock n’ Roll, Country, Hip-Hop, Big Band and cover bands playing music from the ‘60s to the ‘90s. FUN! Hope to see you there! For more info, check out the Ball’s website or call 415-864-6000.
